What Causes Acne?

Acne is a skin condition where the hair follicles become clogged with oil and dead skin cells. This causes whiteheads, pimples, and blackheads to develop. Depending on the severity, acne can scar the skin. Typically, acne is most common in teenagers. However, it can also affect adults. The NHS says that about 95% of people between the ages of 11 and 30 are affected by acne. So, if you are struggling with acne, know that you are not alone.

There are numerous causes for acne that may trigger it to develop and worsen. These include:

Hormonal changes: hormonal changes can happen throughout a person’s life but are particularly common during puberty. Hormonal changes in the body can cause the sebaceous glands to produce more sebum, an oil that blocks the pores and causes breakouts. If you have ever wiped you hand across your face at the end of a long day and it has felt oily, that is because of sebum. It is not unusual, but an overproduction can cause acne.

Further Acne Causes

Certain medications: some people find that medications such as corticosteroids, testosterone, or lithium can worsen their acne. There are many theories as to why this could be, including the effects of medications on the immune system and the direct effects they have on hair follicles. Taken regularly, there are medications that can aggravate the skin, worsening acne.

Poor diet: there have been many studies into the effects of different foods on the skin. Research shows that consuming foods high in carbohydrates, very rich foods, and very sugary foods, can worsen acne. However, further research is still needed to fully understand whether people with acne would benefit from following specific dietary restrictions.

Stress: while stress does not cause acne, it can make it worse. Research shows that stress can trigger breakouts, making existing acne worse. Often, those who struggle with acne are more self-conscious of how they look and therefore more stressed, triggering acne to worsen.

Clogged Follicles: when the follicles in the skin become blocked by oil or dead skin cells, they become inflamed and this can cause acne to develop.

Build-up of Bacteria: if the pores are not regularly and thoroughly cleaned, a build-up of bacteria can result in the pores becoming infected, worsening inflammation and acne. This is why it is so important to clean your face every day.

What are the Current Treatments for Acne?

There are several treatments that are available for acne, both over-the-counter medications as well as prescription. Some common over-the-counter acne treatments include topical ointments like benzoyl peroxide, salicylic acid, alpha hydroxy acids and sulfur.

Doctors may also prescribe oral antibiotics to help reduce the amount of oil produced by the sebaceous glands. However, systemic antibiotics can cause side effects, so they are more commonly used in severe cases. Some people find that taking supplements, such as Zinc, helps to control acne and provide long-lasting relief from inflammation.

What Other Skin Problems Can CBD Oil Help?

CBD oil has both anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, so it provides excellent results when used on a variety of painful and inflammatory skin conditions. Let’s take a look at just a few of them.

CBD Can Treat Eczema and Psoriasis

The anti-inflammatory properties of CBD make it the perfect natural treatment for skin conditions like eczema and psoriasis. CBD effects the body’s endocannabinoid system that is responsible for regulating and balancing the body. Therefore, CBD can help regulate the body’s response to inflammation and redness, reducing the effect of skin conditions like eczema and psoriasis

CBD Can Help Reduce Redness and Rosacea

When it comes to skin conditions like acne, inflammation is often the underlying cause and because CBD has anti-inflammatory properties, it helps combat this. As a result, CBD has proven useful in reducing redness and irritation in the skin, and it works fast to heal numerous other skin problems, preventing them from coming back in the long-term.

CBD Can Reduce Signs of Ageing

CBD can help to reduce the common signs of ageing that develop on the skin over time. CBD oils have been known to reduce the appearance of wrinkles, diminish fine lines, and even out skin tone. What’s more, the Omega 6 and Omega 3 that are present in the hemp plant and in CBD beauty products can help stimulate the production of collagen in the body, keeping your skin hydrated, supple, and youthful!

CBD Can Speed Up the Body’s Healing Process

Acne, among other skin conditions, can cause a lot of scarring on the skin’s surface. This can make people feel self-conscious or embarrassed by their appearance. However, CBD is a powerful antioxidant and, as such, it is ideal for reducing the appearance of scars and for evening out the skin tone.
